I wanted an exhaust that would run cooler than the stainless stocker. My preference was to be a carbon fiber exhaust from Fuel (a brand I really like), but they do not make an exhaust for this bike. I didn't want to spend the $$$$ for Akropovic, so basically came down to Wings and Tekmo. Ultimately, went with Tekmo. Bike is stock (airbox, headers, etc).
Install was simple. The pipe connector clamp that comes with the Tekmo is not as heavy duty as the clamp on the stocker (that connects the mid-pipe to the exhaust), but it can be snugged up sufficiently. The bolt that came with the clamp was too short to get the threads started, so I bought a longer stainless bolt, solved the problem. The exhaust lined up nicely to the stock exhaust hanger/bracket, no issues there.
First time I started it up, I let the bike idle for 15 minutes, without touching anything, so the ECU would adjust. Didn't work. Bike stalled immediately upon shifting into first gear. Started it back up, gave it some throttle, stalled releasing the clutch. Started back up, kept the throttle cracked, got it going down the street. Stalled at the first corner.
Did this several times - bike would run so long as you kept the throttle on, but would stall if you closed the throttle with the clutch in when downshifting (even at 30 - 35mph).
Spoke with Rottweiler, who were very helpful in suggesting options and explaining how fuel dongles/etc worked with the bike.
So, ordered the fuel dongle and the 02 Sensor replacement bolt. Also pretty simple install. Started the bike up, let it idle 15 minutes, then test ride. Seemed good for a few minutes riding, then stalling issues returned. Not as bad as w/o the dongle, but still an issue. Returned home and parked the bike. Had a beer to drown my sorrows.
Couple days later, fired up the bike, let it idle 15 minutes again, took it for a test ride. No stalling issues. Now paranoid, I rode for 20 minutes around local neighborhoods, up to ~45/50 mph. Lots of stopping/starting, down shifting, coast on clutch, etc. No issues.
Couple days later, still paranoid, fired the bike up, let it warm up for a minute or two, then 15 or 20 minute jaunt around the neighborhood. No issues.
I've taken a couple other short trips around the area (20 to 30 minutes), trying to get the bike to stall by pulling in the clutch at speed, downshifting and braking, to make a sharp turn, but not able to get the bike to stall (yay!). No issues stalling off the line or while idling. The bike seems to be actually running very nicely now.
The dongle makes a noticeable difference - it's not imaginary or subtle (I've used this type of device on another bike, but could never tell the difference). With the exhaust and dongle, the bike is smoother in lower rpm's, especially while "lugging". There is a stronger mid-range pull that is also noticeable. Overall, bike seems smoother, and you can also hear the difference in the engine sound now that it's not so lean.
For the exhaust note, I like it. Not overly loud (while wearing an Arai XD4, which lets in a tremendous amount of road noise). From my perspective I don't find it much louder than the stocker - it's a different kind of 'loud'. The sound is warmer, deeper, kind of mellow but still has a bit of punch to it, without being an obnoxious BBRRAAAPPP.
Overall am happy now, so having a beer to celebrate. In full transparency, I had issues with the bike stalling when it was brand new (one example - decelerating from 65mph hwy to make a hard right at an intersection, squeeze in clutch, shift down to 3rd and boom - engine stalls while turning into the corner, so coast thru the corner and try to pull over without getting crushed from traffic behind). After about 1K miles on the bike, the stalling issue went away (until the replacement exahust install).
Suggestion is to get the dongle at the time you get the exhuast, to give the bike a fighting chance. :)
Thank you again to Rottweiler for helping me troubleshoot and resolve the issue.
Ride safe :)
